Chart Library and Builder
Create, preview, and manage reusable charts from Pay data, Assignar Operations, or Custom Report sheets
Chart Library and Builder
The Chart Library gives you one place to create and manage charts across your account. Open Reports from the sidebar, then select the Charts card on the Reports page (Reports → Charts). You can also go to /reports/charts within your team workspace.
You can build a chart from Pay data (or Assignar Operations) without creating a Custom Report first, or from a saved Custom Report sheet the same way as before.
Who Can Use the Chart Library
Access to Reports and the Chart Library requires the Reports permission (finance.reports). If you cannot see Reports in the sidebar, ask an account owner or admin to grant you that permission.
Create a Chart
- Open Reports, select the Charts card, and click New chart.
- Choose a data source (see Choose a data source below).
- Choose the chart type and fields:
- Select the category used for labels or grouping
- Select a value and aggregation (Sum, Average, or Count)
- For a stacked bar, select a series field
- For a scatter chart, select numeric X and Y fields
- For a map chart, pick a location-bearing source (dockets, form submissions, or timesheets captured from a form); points use the category for colour and the value for size
- Set the name and any optional description, colour, or row limit
- Cartesian charts label each axis with the selected field name. You can override those titles with the optional X-axis title / Y-axis title fields
- Check the live preview. It updates as you change the source, type, and fields.
- Click Save chart.
The saved chart appears in the library immediately.
Choose a Data Source
The source picker lists two groups:
- From Pay data — datasets from your account, grouped by category:
- Financial
- Labor & Payroll
- Field Operations
- Procurement
- Job Costing
- Forms
- Reference
- From report templates — sheets from saved Custom Reports
From Pay data
Pick a dataset, then pick the fields to chart. There is no sheet or cell-range step — that only applies when the source is a report template.
Some columns cannot be used as a measure (for example a pay rate). Summing them would not be meaningful, so they do not appear in the value picker.
Date range
Many Pay and Operations datasets support a date range filter in the builder. Use it when you care about a specific period.
Results are capped. A chart over a very wide (or open-ended) range may only include the first rows of data — not the full period. When that happens, the chart shows a notice so you know the view was truncated. Narrow the date range for a complete picture of that period.
Assignar Operations sources
Assignar Operations datasets (for example Ops Timesheets) appear under From Pay data in their own category when your account can use Operations reporting.
They require a connected Assignar Operations integration. If the integration is not connected, those sources appear greyed out with a short reason, and you cannot select them until the connection is in place.
Operations chart data comes from a saved snapshot, not a live query every time you open the library. That keeps charts fast to load. Use Refresh on the chart card to pull the latest data from Assignar Operations. The card shows when the snapshot was last updated — see How fresh the data is.
Refreshing updates the shared snapshot for that source and filter combination, so every chart that uses the same source and filters gets the new data.
From report templates
- Pick a source report.
- Pick the sheet that contains the data you want to chart.
- Optionally enter an A1 range such as
A1:E50. Leave it blank to use the sheet's whole used range.
Charts from a report template read the last saved version of that Custom Report sheet. If you change source data in the report editor, save the report before returning to the library to see the updated chart.
Tip: Use a sheet with a clear header row. The builder uses those headers as the available field names.
Standalone Chart Types
The Chart Builder supports ten chart types:
| Type | Best for |
|---|---|
| Bar | Comparing values across categories |
| Line | Showing trends across ordered categories |
| Area | Showing trends with emphasis on volume |
| Pie | Showing part-to-whole composition |
| Horizontal bar | Comparing categories with long labels |
| Stacked bar | Splitting each category by a second series field |
| Donut | Showing part-to-whole composition with a centre hole |
| Scatter | Comparing two numeric fields |
| Map | Plotting rows that carry a location on a map |
| Stat | Showing a single aggregated number as a KPI-style headline, with no category axis |
A map chart is available when the chosen data source carries location information — today that is dockets, form submissions, and timesheets captured from a form. Points are coloured by the category field and sized by the value field; busy areas group into clusters that expand as you zoom. Rows without a location are not shown, and the chart tells you how many were left out. For timesheets this is expected — only timesheets captured from a form carry a location, so imported timesheets will not appear.
Display Formatting
You can format a chart's measure — its axis values, tooltip values, and the number on a stat chart. Formatting never applies to category labels, ids, or dates.
Choose a number style: plain, currency, or percent. Currency uses the account's region setting, so the symbol and grouping follow the region configured for the team account rather than the viewer's browser. Percent appends % to the value and does not rescale it — a measure of 12.5 renders as "12.5%".
You can set decimal places to automatic or a fixed 0–4, turn on compact notation so 1,200,000 appears as 1.2M, and add an optional prefix or suffix of up to 8 characters each.
A stat chart is configured with a measure and an aggregation only — no category axis and no row limit. It saves, edits, duplicates, and pins to a dashboard like any other chart.
How Fresh the Data Is
Every chart card carries a short line under the plot telling you where its numbers came from and how old they are.
| What you see | What it means |
|---|---|
| Live | The chart queries your data every time it loads. There is nothing to refresh — it is already current. |
| Updated 2h ago | The chart reads a saved snapshot taken at that time: a Custom Report sheet, or an Assignar Operations snapshot. |
| Imported 3d ago | The sheet behind the chart was typed in by hand or loaded from a file, so there is no source to re-query. The time is when it was imported. |
| Not loaded yet | The chart points at a snapshot source that has never been loaded. Refresh it (Operations), or open and save the report (Custom Report sheets). |
Hover the line to see the exact date and time, whether the last refresh was manual or scheduled, and whether it failed.
When the Line Turns Amber
Updated … turns amber when the data is older than it should be:
- On a report sheet with a refresh schedule, older than the schedule's interval, plus half an hour of slack for the refresh itself to run.
- Everywhere else — no schedule set, or Assignar Operations data — older than 24 hours.
It also turns amber as soon as a scheduled refresh fails, whatever the age, so a report quietly falling behind looks different from one that is simply due.
Live and Imported … never turn amber. A live chart is never old, and a hand-built sheet is not "late" — nothing was supposed to update it.
Note: Charts built from Assignar Operations are judged against the 24-hour rule, not against a report's schedule. Scheduled refresh does not cover Operations sheets in this release — see Refreshing on a schedule.
The same line appears on dashboard tiles and in the Charts pane of the report editor, so a number carries its age wherever you meet it.
Manage Charts
Open the actions menu on a chart card to:
- Edit — reopen the Chart Builder and change its source, fields, type, name, or display options
- Duplicate — create a separate copy that you can adjust without changing the original
- Delete — confirm and remove the chart from the library
For Assignar Operations charts, use Refresh on the card when you want the latest Operations data (see above).
Charts Created in Report Templates
Charts created inside a Custom Report template also appear automatically in the Chart Library. Their card shows the source report name and the latest data from the saved workbook.
Choose Edit in report from the card's actions menu to open the original Custom Report. This is useful when you need to edit the source sheet, refresh its connected data, or manage a template-created chart in the report's Charts pane.
Adding a Chart to a Dashboard
Open a chart card's actions menu and choose Add to dashboard to place it on any of your dashboards. The tile stays linked to the chart, so editing the chart here updates every dashboard showing it.
The From your Pay data section on this page lists ready-made charts built from data you already have. Each one can be added straight to a dashboard, or Customised into your own editable copy in the library.
Saved Widgets
Configured KPI and Top by total widgets can be saved into this same library. On a dashboard tile, open Configure and choose Save to library. The widget appears here with a KPI or List badge, and the dashboard tile switches to a library link.
From a saved-widget card you can:
- Edit — change the name, data source, aggregation, and display options. Saving updates every dashboard that uses this widget (the same as editing a chart)
- Add to dashboard — place it on any of your boards
- Duplicate — create a separate copy you can adjust without changing the original
- Delete — remove it from the library. Boards that still reference it show it as removed
Inline widget tiles that you have not saved keep their configuration on the tile only.
